Steeleye Span - Rave On (1970-1976)

Steeleye Span, formada em 1969, foi a mais duradoura e consistente banda da cena folk inglesa. No início com temas e instrumentos mais tradicionais e no decorrer dos anos 70 abrindo caminho para as guitarras. Impossível não associá-la ao Fairport Convention, pelo estilo, os lindos vocais femininos de Sandy Denny (Fairport) e Maddy Prior (Steeleye Span), as harmonias belíssimas de ambas as bandas, além do grupo ter sido fundado por Ashley Hutchings, ex-baixista do Fairport Convention. Gay e Terry Woods estão no line-up do primeiro álbum, de 1970. Rolam canções fortíssimas ao longo da trajetória da banda como Alison Gross e sua história macabra: a bruxa que transforma um homem que a rejeita em um verme, e Cam Ye O'er Frae France com um arranjo capaz de seduzir qualquer fã de folk ou rock. Sempre lançando discos muito bem trabalhados de altíssimo nível, como Now We Are Six, produzido por figuras como Ian Anderson e com participação de David Bowie no saxofone.

Big Bill Broonzy - Goin' Down This Road

Um dos maiores representantes do blues de todos os tempos. Sua primeira gravação foi Big Bill's Blues, de 1927. Em 1938 tocou no festival John Hammond's "From Spirituals To Swing", no lugar de Robert Johnson, que havia morrido pouco tempo antes da realização do show. Pioneiro no estilo Chicago Blues quando começou a utilizar instrumentos elétricos, mesmo sem nunca abandonar o folk-blues de raiz e os rags. Compôs e gravou alguns dos maiores clássicos do gênero, entre 1927 e 1942, registrando 224 músicas,. É cultuado pelos grandes seguidores do blues e rock, como Clapton que tornou imortal “sua” Key to the Highway, presente num dos maiores discos de rock da história: Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs, de 1970, e Hey Hey, lançada no famoso álbum Eric Clapton - Unplugged. Faleceu em 1958 devido a um câncer na garganta. Impossível falar em blues sem reverenciar Big Bill Broonzy.

David Bowie - Rock 'n' Roll Suicide

Ele contribuiu muito para tudo que ouvimos e vimos no rock a partir do final dos anos 60. Seus discos são essenciais para entendermos uma boa parte de sons e imagens dessa época, do folk psicodélico ao glam rock, cada álbum nos proporciona uma viagem para mundos diferentes. Em 1969, Space Oddity aparecia com letras filosóficas pós-hippie sobre paz, amor, num som folk rock acústico fortificado pelo rock’n’roll. Em The Man Who Sold the World temos mais pegada, com sua nova banda e um guitarrista dos mais virtuosos: Mick Ronson. Aí segue Hunky Dory: uma sonoridade incrível, sua voz cada vez mais forte e única, capaz de mudanças incríveis nos timbres e harmonias, e rolam as homenagens aos seus ídolos Bob Dylan, Andy Warhol e Lou Reed & The Velvet Underground. Impossível deixar de contar a história de The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars: Um alienígena chamado Ziggy Stardust, que vem para salvar a Terra que seria destruída em cinco anos e acaba formando uma banda chamada "Spiders from Mars". Ele se torna uma estrela e acaba cendendo aos “exageros” do rock n' roll. O álbum termina com o suicídio de Ziggy. Aladdin Sane e Diamond Dogs são dois discos com o puro rock’n’roll do começo dos anos 70, o primeiro com levadas mais selvagens e guitarras rasgantes tipo T.Rex e Stones, o segundo com rocks clássicos, já fora da fase Ziggy (a música Rebel Rebel é um rockão, “irmãzinha” de Satisfaction, e Diamond Dogs também é um som "Stoneano" de primeira). Pin Ups mostra suas influências dos anos 60, fortíssimas por sinal: The Who, The Pretty Things, The Kinks, Them, The Yardbirds, Syd Barrett & Pink Floyd, The Mojos, The Easybeats, The Merseys (Dos Rolling Stones ele já tinha gravado Let's Spend the Night Together no disco anterior, uma das melhores interpretações de alguma música da banda, com a cara de Bowie). Taj Mahal - Ain't That a Lot Of Love

Em 1964 formou a banda Rising Sons com Ry Cooder e outros grandes músicos, misturavam o blues com folk-rock e gravaram um discão, um dos meus preferidos do gênero. Amante do blues acústico, Taj Mahal adotou vários estilos em sua música, por isso nunca agradou muito os puristas do blues. Em 1968, por exemplo, fez uma apresentação ao vivo no Rolling Stones Rock’n’Roll Circus cantando Ain't That a Lot Of Love, um soul-rock de arrepiar! Influências claras de Blind Willie McTell e Mississippi John Hurt na sua obra, usou a técnica fingerpicking em várias canções. Impossível de não se emocionar com a eletrizante versão de Corinna com os Rolling Stones, fazendo um dueto inesquecível com Mick Jagger, que por sinal, relembra os primórdios da banda no começo dos 60's, dando um show à parte na gaita. Apesar de todos os sons que Taj experimentou, nunca deixou de lado o blues de raiz, seu bom e velho amigo.

Joe Egan & Gerry Rafferty - Back On The Road

Stealers Wheel foi uma banda formada na Escócia no início da década de 70 por Joe Egan e Gerry Rafferty. Misturavam folk, rock, pop, e eram considerados a versão britânica do supergrupo americano Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. Foram produzidos pelos famosos compositores e produtores Leiber & Stoller, lançando três ótimos álbuns entre 72 e 75. Egan e Rafferty tiveram grandes canções nas carreiras solo também. Me lembro de quando ouvia rádio, que a locutora com voz insinuante anunciava o nome daqueles programas da madrugada: “Love alguma coisa”, e rolava Back on The Road, do Joe Egan. Adorava a música, balada folk cheia de violões estilo America ou Eagles. Depois veio toda a força de Stuck in the Middle with You resgatada em 1992 no filme "Cães de Aluguel" de Quentin Tarantino, com a banda incluindo Rafferty. Aí conheci a relação desses dois caras geniais. Gerry Rafferty nos anos 60 e começo dos 70 fez parte da banda The Humblebums, contribuindo com suas grandes composições e harmonias, como nas músicas Steamboat Row, Coconut Tree, Patrick e Please Sing a Song For Us. Morreu aos 63 anos, em janeiro deste ano (2011) por problemas relacionados ao alcoolismo.

Neil Young - Let It Shine

Sua primeira banda, Buffalo Springfield, com Stephen Stills, Richie Furay e Dewey Martin, tornou-se muito cultuada e uma referência entre os amantes do folk psicodélico. O Crazy Horse formou-se a partir do seu primeiro álbum solo, e começou a definir sua marca registrada de intercalar country, folk e baladas acústicas com grandes rocks com guitarras “sujas”. Passou também pelo Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, mais um super grupo surgido de membros das bandas sessentistas The Hollies, The Byrds e Buffalo Springfield. Eles eram tão perfeitos que a primeira apresentação ao vivo que fizeram juntos foi direto no Festival de Woodstock, em 1969. Os discos de Neil Young dos anos setenta são símbolos do country-rock e folk-rock, indispensáveis, como Everybody Knows this is Nowhere, After the Gold Rush, Harvest, Zuma, Comes a Time e Rust Never Sleeps. Faz parte da lista dos gênios do rock’n’roll, com os maiores cantores e compositores como Bob Dylan, Jim Morrison, John Lennon e Van Morrison.

The Faces - Shake, Shudder

Costumo comparar muito os Faces aos Rolling Stones, não só por estarem entre minhas bandas favoritas e pelos “excessos”, mas pelo puro rock’n’roll vindo da escola de Chuck Berry, os super-vocais de Rod Stewart e Mick Jagger que os diferenciam dos demais, e as guitarras “sujas” que só Ron Wood e Keith Richards sabem fazer mostrando o verdadeiro significado do rock. Aliás, o tempo veio deixá-los mais próximos no meio dos 70's nos Stones, e acho mesmo que “foram feitos um para o outro”. Além dos outros músicos de primeira dos Faces, admiro muito Ronnie Lane , grande compositor, uma voz totalmente diferente dos dois “roucos” Wood e Stewart, trazendo o lado mais folk e country da banda.

Kris Kristofferson & Rita Coolidge - I Heard The Bluebirds Sing

Rita era conhecida como “The Delta Lady” e foi a inspiração para Leon Russell compor o famoso rock. Conheceu Kris Kristofferson durante as filmagens do filme "Pat Garrett e Billy the Kid" e se casaram em 1973. Com ele, gravou grandes duetos da música country como Lover Please, From The Bottle To The Bottom e ótimos álbuns solo. Kristofferson teve suas músicas gravadas por grandes nomes da country music,como por exemplo: Waylon Jennings (The Taker), Ray Price (For the Good Times), Johnny Cash (Sunday Morning Coming Down) e Sammi Smith (Help Me Make It Through the Night). Gosto demais dos seus discos, possui um jeito especial de cantar e contar histórias, tipo Gordon Lightfoot ou Johnny Cash. Também namorou Janis Joplin em 1971, que gravou sua composição Me and Bobby McGee de forma extraordinária, misturando a estilo country suave de Kris no início da canção com seu rock envolvente no decorrer da música.

Um dos grupos mais admirados e influentes de sua época, com dois dos melhores discos dos anos 60: Music from Big Pink, de 68, e The Band, de 69. Cada integrante era multi-instrumentista, no estúdio eles podiam inventar diferentes configurações em sua formação, conforme o mais adequado para cada canção. Garth Hudson era capaz de surgir com uma variada gama de timbres em seu órgão Lowrey eletrônico. Richard Manuel, Rick Danko e Levon Helm proporcionavam individualmente uma voz distinta ao The Band. Robbie Robertson era o principal compositor e grande guitarrista. Tudo isso colocado numa mistura de country, soul, rock’n’roll, folk, doo-wop, blues, etc. The Last Waltz é um dos melhores filmes de rock da história, onde desfilam Eric Clapton, Van Morrison, Emmylou Harris, Neil Young, entre outros. Nesse encontro não poderiam faltar Ronnie Hawkins e Bob Dylan, é claro. Com Dylan, eles começaram com uma série de tumultuados concertos entre 65 e 66, marcando a transição final do cantor do folk para o rock. Em muitos dos concertos, os puristas do folk  xingavam e vaiavam suas apresentações. Daí em diante foi surgindo uma das melhores parcerias da história do rock'n'roll: Bob Dylan & The Band. The Basement Tapes é um dos meus discos favoritos, quando me deparei pela primeira vez com todas aqueles vozes “diferentes” e “choradas” nas canções de Dylan, achei fantástico e escutei You Ain't Goin' Nowhere, Tears Of Rage, Million Dollar Bash, etc, dezenas de vezes no mesmo dia, me lembro que era impossível ouvir outro som, mesmo não sabendo muito bem o que era aquilo...

Johnny Rivers - Muddy River

Na primeira metade dos anos 60, quando as bandas britânicas de rock dominavam, ele vinha com o rock’n’roll básico dos anos 50 de Chuck Berry, variando livremente entre canções clássicas de Jerry Lee Lewis/Little Richard e Beatles/Rolling Stones. Sempre dominando a instrumentação básica: guitarra, baixo e bateria. Teve seu lado country e folk com muito Bob Dylan, Byrds, Van Morrison, Donovan, Willie Nelson, John Fogerty, Johnny Cash, etc. Suas interpretações são únicas pela levada inconfundível e o rítmo inigualável de sua guitarra (aquela de Do You Wanna Dance?, Secret Agent Man e It’s Too Late), desde o Whisky a Go-Go, passando pelos vários caminhos do rock’n’roll, como o R&B, soul, rockabilly, soft rock e até pitadas de psicodelia.

The Zombies - Summertime (1964-1968)

The Zombies, liderados por Colin Blunstone (vocais) e Rod Argent (teclados), faziam um pop-rock com toques psicodélicos e uma musicalidade incrível, além do R&B, é claro. O som deles era imcompatível com o rock britânico que rolava na época. Só podiam ser comparados aos Beatles e Beach Boys, pela sofisticação melódica de suas canções. É difícil acreditar que uma música como She’s Not There é de 64. O álbum Odessey and Oracle, de 1968, é considerado hoje em dia um dos melhores dos 60’s, uma obra-prima.
